Is it predatory? In number 2, I can see a look that suggests that the hunt is on.

Taniwha - no, I don't think they are predatory. Wikipedia says: "Their diet consists mainly of acorns (oak seeds) and pine nuts, extensively supplemented by invertebrates and their larvae, soft fruits and berries, and also human-provided scraps in parks and towns." This was in a resort town, so I suspect the hunt was for scraps, mostly. :)
Shitake - Thank you! They are certainly smaller than the magpies I'm more used to, the Eurasian ones. That is a pine nut the bird is holding there, btw.
