Book Forty Three.

BeardyMan 'accidentally' read this whole book in bed before going to sleep recently. This of course meant i had to read it. I managed it in four days. It's an easy read, but a good read. It's easy because nothing drags, there is something interesting going on constantly. Okay, i pretty much hated every character, but that's not at all unusual for me.

I find it difficult to get with the book if I don't like the character or the author. Had exceptions though - Trainspotting, for example. With Bill Bryson, I usually start by enjoying his company and observations. By about two thirds of the way through I'm tired of his cynicism and of him going on about how it was so much better in the olden days. I want to ditch him and explore the country on my own.

I can cope with disliking characters, so long as they are written well and believably. The author/narrative voice has to be enjoyable, though.
