this has been an active season, no doubt. looks like bad news for Key West : (

onceupon says:

It may have been a bad idea for humans to settle in Key West. *sigh* Or any of Florida for that matter. What were we thinking?

mostly i'm anxious that my flight will be cancelled tomorrow

Good point! My friends in NYC tell me it's already in the 60s at night there. It was 90-some-odd degrees in Orlando yesterday. *grin*

not being a Florida native, i'm not used to the absence of autumn. i miss boots.

no problem with the absence of winter and snowstorms, however : D

The furthest north I ever lived was Atlanta and even those winters are relatively mild. Then a few years in southeast asia, and it's at the point now where anything under 80 degrees sees me grabbing a sweater. What is this autumn of which you speak? *laugh*

I wear boots year 'round anyway, in blatant disregard of the outside temp. That's why we have climate control, after all. *grin*

Frankly, I'm way grateful for evening temps in the 60's. Makes sleep easier. :)

It's bad though. I mean, how do we restart the letters when we hit z. The season goes til the end of November. You think we'll have more than 8 more storms by then? Yeah, me too. I just hope this one doesn't break through to the Gulf. We don't need another monster on our hands.

The plan is to start with the letters of the Greek alphabet, should be exhaust our remaining supply of letters.

That is SO going to happen.

We're all being optimists around here, crossing our fingers and saying "Just six more weeks!" (we're usually done by the beginning of November) but....

ElphsHouse says:

They only go to "Wilma", so the window is 4 storms until they have to start using the Greek alphabet. my guess? that'll be sometime in the next two weeks.
I just hope I can get out of here tomorrow.
More than that, I hope that Rita leaves LA and MS alone.

kostika says:

WHy don't they just start with A again and use differant names?

20th Sep 2005, 15:59

Euphro says:

Wasn't Otto in December last year?

Kostika, so far there have never been more than 21 Atlantic hurricanes in a season (that did happen in 1933, before the current naming conventions started). There is a cycle of six storm name sequences (see link) with names associated with particularly severe storms being retired. If there are more than 21 storms, then Alpha, Beta, Gamma and so on will be used (and this is quite likely this year for the first time) :)
