Wood flower

It's from the tree outside work. No idea what kind it is but this looked like a flower to me. It obviously was some sort of pod.

Edited to Add: Euphro says "It is the outer shell of beech mast, which are the nuts of the beech tree."

*blushes* Beech mast, although high in tannin, is very tasty and can be used to make pesto after soaking. Getting the nuts out of their casings is a fiddly job. Only trouble is, most trees only produce it about one year in four :)

I used to spend ages as a child taking these things apart. Didn't dare eat them though (wish I'd tried it now). I can't imagine how many you'd need for pesto! + you'd have to fight off all the birds and squirrels.
