7. Narrative & Illustration – Project 66, Juxtaposition.

Placing two elements in an image, suggesting a relationship is the mainstay of illustration. It is important to suggest a connection. Making a simple still-life would cover it. Advertising uses this technique a lot, mainly because of the control one has over the subject & its surroundings.

Another way to achieve this is by use of focal length & camera position in order to combine two elements within the field of view.

Here is an example of the above. My partner Anja makes lovely jewellery as a hobby. With an example of some of her work in sharp focus in the foreground and Anja at work, slightly out of focus in the background I have created an illustration using juxtaposition.
