It's a picture which makes me want to know the story behind it. Who is the man in the photo?
The man in the picture is John, head ranger for the Karajarri Rangers a traditional owner for that area (about 170km south of Broome).
Last week we were helping out the Department of Environment and Conservation mob with their annual turtle nesting surveys at 80 mile beach. This involves a leisurely stroll up a 6km stretch of the coastline, recording some data on turtle nesting tracks. When I tell my boss at work that I haven't worked so hard as I did last week, I think he doesn't believe me.
This Karajarri mob are pretty proud and didn't accept an offer to camp at the station homestead, and decided to camp at this place, which was an old fishing camp base consisting of a tin shed a few tables and thats about it. No water, no power, no shade trees is usually not a problem, but when it gets bloody hot (45c by 06:30am) its not nice.
Anyway this is John having the last of his cool drinks before the ice runs out:)
Sympathising a lot with the extreme temps- its going to be over 40C today and was 43 yesterday. At least I could hide in the air con.
So what's the shipping container doing up on the petrol drums? Looks an interesting addition to the place.
Not sure really why its up on drums. It seems like a similar level to a flat top truck so maybe easier to just transfer the fish from sea container to refrigerated truck?
Last week at work for this year for me. Have a good christmas break and catch you next year.
Have a great Chrissy JL- you've sure earnt it! Any chance of you coming over to the east this time?
Only to SA, JE. The sailing championships are in Victor Harbour this year. I can feel a cyclone or two coming this year, so dont want to spend too much time away from home.
I know how you feel- I get like that around bushfire season.
I remember when I was in Broome last October and the wet season approaching- the air was wanting the crack with the tension of it. Fabulous feeling but multiplied for an impending cyclone was something I wasn't looking forward to experiencing- a bit scary all those 'Cyclone Evacuation Centre' signs around town.
Enjoy the sailing championships. Sounds like a nice way to spend some summer holidays.
