The Illustrated Book of Genesis by various authors and illustrations by Robert Crumb was terrific. The graphic format really brings out the contradictions, polytheism, immorality, the clash and unsuccessful meshing of matriarchy into patriarchy and the overall WTF value of Genesis.

Cruelty by Kathleen Taylor was a good and informative read. No clinical descriptions or anything of that nature, but an education in neuroscience; how our brains work in the matters of actions, emotions, beliefs etc., and how these can lead to cruelty, both callous and sadistic.

I'm about a quarter into Dread by Philip Alcabes, a book about how fear and fantasy fuel epidemics and our actions regarding them. Interesting so far, but the writing lacks cohesion to an extent.

I checked out some "exclusive clips" of robert crumb's genesis on boingboing.net recently. I have to say it looks like an absolutely gorgeous tome, definitely high up on my christmas list.

The Illustrated Book of Genesis looks awesome!

Did you know that there is a graphic novel coming out (this xmas i think) of the complete Bible? I really want to get it, if only for curiosity value...

Billion, I had it on my wishlist before it was published! Barnes & Noble also had a signed, numbered and limited edition (now gone) for $300.00. Couldn't afford that one. I really wish Crumb would do Exodus, but considering Genesis took him 5 years, that probably won't happen. It's definitely worth reading and having.

JC, it is awesome. I read it in one sitting the evening it arrived. I didn't know about a graphic version. Any more info on that one? I know there's a Manga version floating around out there somewhere.

hehe, definitely. I know you have strong views on judeo-christian values caine, and you probably know some of mine, but I have to admit I pick up the bible from time to time, read a few passages, and do appreciate them as great works of fiction.

Oh, the bible has distinct value. I studied it in depth for over 5 years, and have read many different translations. (Actual translations, not the awful mess which is the King James version, although I read that one too.)

I know a great many people who ended up on the road to atheism because they read the bible - actually read it.

It's very interesting to see how earlier myths (barely re-worked) are incorporated, along with varying social mores of the time. The Bronze age view of how things worked is often interesting too.
