People are very dissatisfied and they don't want to be. But to say that you are running a service with no cover, and that you will post something to the community when you can ... where is your PR hat? Hobo has been complaining for ages with no real response other than one from Mat which says he's not doing it anymore because he can't - but no-one until this comment of yours has said who is responsible (it seems no-one while Dan was away?) and this comment is on a private blog. The community as a whole needs a recognition of the problems, what is going to be done, who is responsible for the admin etc When it appears that you are ignoring the problems and not communicating people get annoyed and none of us want to lose this community - but you can't depend on good will, it does need to work

I've been having this problem for ages - and that includes using the post button at the top. It's part of the reason I'm posting less, as I'm having to prioritise my energy more strictly than normal.

TheOtherHalf posted that she lost loads of stuff posted from Shozu yesterday and Shitake also was distressed about it the other day too

Also I'm sometimes unable to reach moblog at all via mobile phone

I think that's because people mainly email in instead of using the post button, so they're all backed up or just being rejected. The main problems I've been having are slowness (which has improved for me of recent), emailing in photos, and comment email notifications.

I do hope the current problems don't lead to people jumping ship and damaging the community here. That would be a great shame. But I can understand the frustration that many feel.

Viv, I think you and Joker are spot on when talking about people being dissatisfied and not wanting to be, as well as the huge amount of goodwill (and good faith) that shines through from the community-at-large. Admittedly this type of outage doesn't happen often, but when it does I think the people give the site a lot of latitude. It's difficult to continue doing so when the leaders don't respond within a timely period however, and in this case it's been a very long time indeed without any official word.

For me, the current problems notwithstanding, I have had a growing feeling over the last few months that the site is being much less tightly controlled than it used to be. The volume of might-be-spam blogs taking up the latest page; lack of news / developments / competitions; poor response on the forums (remember when the forums used to be hot? Yeah, me neither actually, but they were certainly a lot busier with activity); no real transparency regarding, well, regarding anything. All of this (and more) lends itself to less activity on the site and moblog seeming more like a ghost town than a party town.

People who view moblog with any real frequency mostly still love it here. As Steph said, even when I'm not commenting I'm still logging on and looking at moblog. For me, I'm not looking over any other fences or about to join another photo-site anytime soon, forget it. I'm sure most of us aren't going anywhere, which means we have to be dealt with. My suggestion is that we tie a big chain around ourselves and sit in the middle where everyone walks. Our place is here and shit needs to be done.

Incidentally, in the last couple of weeks I've taken the reaper to anything even resembling a spam blog, though admittedly some of them can be quite hard to tell. It's been quite liberating.

The other side of this from a business perspective is:

People are paying for this service and quite frankly MBUK are not delivering on it. I'm not sure how that one would pan out if a / some / all subscribers started shouting about not getting what they pay for.

I noticed mails were taking longer to appear on the site a good few months ago. At first I put it down to having a BlackBerry and a different mail client, but then a few tests with my Nokia proved that was not the case. Then the site started to get un bearably slow so I stopped visiting as much because I couldn't post when I wanted to.

Then there were all the spam accounts, people using MBUK as a shop front for selling cards, I mean WTF! come on guys...

As for 'Dan has been on holiday' sorry this is a business, you are (or not as the case may be) providing a service. One person being away shuld not mean the world stops spinning, when is Dan back, when can we expect Dan to be working on this, when will Dan have and ETTF? These are all questions that would be asked in the 'real world' then when it was fixed, a great deal on analysis would be carried out and procedures would be put in place to ensure the business did not fail again...

Alfie, you were on the site at 0815 this morning comenting on this, where is the big 'We are sorry, we got problems, Thor the database monkey slipped and got caught up in the cogs and broke MBUK' post?

The fact that you have not spent 5 minutes posting something for all to see when they arrive on the site makes people think you / MBUK don't actually care in all of this..

If it's f**ked and not going to be fixed for a week tell us!

It's the lack of any one person taking responsibility for this from a business perspective that worries me - where's the company 'we' gone? None of us are going to abandon ship if we can't post for a week but there are many many other posters to this blog who will be off elsewhere to find a more stable place to host their photos, especially if their help queries are getting no response like mine. Clearly this is a very worrying state of affairs for the future of moblog which I think is what we're all concerned about.

It might take a while to work through the backlog, but posts and comment/highlight updates that should have been done over the last few days should all show up eventually. Site may go a bit slow during this process, please have patience.

Personal note: very, very sorry y'all been messed around. I can't explain just how terrible I feel that we've let you guys down. If I could do something more about this, I would - but I've actually been getting a bit better from the RSI recently, and that's almost entirely due to spending much less time at a computer. That, for me, is good - but on the other hand, I hate that I can't sit here and fix the ongoing problems that the new site is having.

Again - really, really sorry.

On a slightly different note though, while we're all in the room - I'd just like to say that not having had email notifications for a few days does seem to have boosted comment activity on the site - I've been enjoying having people around a bit more again since they're having to log on to the site and hunt out who's commented on what instead of relying on email notifications. Also I guess it's been easier to find people's posts because there have been less. So it's not all been misery.

Having stumbled upon this thread completely by accident I feel even more pissed off than I did when I first started complaining some months back. Thanks for letting this happen on your blog Joker, but it SHOULDN'T BE HERE. It should be up on the forum where it belongs. I noticed that Alfie has only made one comment, and a very desultory and half-hearted comment at that. Seems to me that the only people who give a toss about Moblog are the people who use it regularly for its intended purpose; as an online community, and there has been a major slump in "community spirit" around here, due the ongoing problems experienced.

Because we discontinued the MMS number (because of mounting and un-manageable costs) the majority of emails from people I've been dealing with have been because people have been sending to the old number, so perhaps I was not as vigilant in checking that people were able to post correctly as I should have been.

The reason my post was so brief this morning is because I am working full time somewhere and have been for some time now. It's an insanely busy role and I tend to only be home for about 8/8:30 pm. What you guys of course don't see is the reams of emails between the Moblog team as we try to figure out what's wrong and fix it. I'm sorry I was not able to be more vocal today in letting you know we are doing our best, and I appreciate that everyone's getting to the end of their rope. Your ongoing support and use of the site means everything to us, so once more I'm really sorry and, like Mat, hope you can bear with us!

Moblog is some special train, and Mat and Alfie made it happen and propped it up, nursed it along. We all care about this silly old thing, so let's get some solutions going, move on, and deal with the problem.

Alfie, Mat, what's on the table, what does moblog need, anything we can do?

and to my moblog family--if you haven't paid your subscription, belly up to the bar. If you like the blog and never bothered to sign up, try the glory of having 'subscriber' next to your name. And all those extra blogs, the ones you added, they could be subscriptions as well.

Para, that is a rather insulting statement, and I hope borne out of frustration. If I was that concerned about my CV I'd have been in a high paying job years ago, you have no idea what I've given up for Moblog, and even now I'm on a short term contract with a firm, mostly so I don't go into further debt.

The site is constantly monitored by loads of amazing and committed moderators who do everything from deleting spammy comments to spam accounts, along with Mat and I that really does make the site as cared for as it can be by unpaid volunteers.

For me, the main issue is that we are hamstrung and unable to innovate. Here's the deeper issue: when we re-built Moblog Dan built it on the Django framework, which Mat is not versed in. That has put us up against a rather solid brick wall as far as both further development and even maintenance is concerned (not mentioning Mat's RSI) because any work needing done on the site we have to *pay* for. We don't have the money. With me not being able to go out and get companies and brands using the site we're not bringing in money save for subscription revenues, which just about pay for the hosting of the site. In terms of the current issues around posting, they were worked out and fixed within 2 days. I think that's pretty good, but I can understand how not getting more than a "We're doing our best, more info shortly" message made some feel we were being careless or brusque with our management of the site.

I'm going to really make an effort to be more responsive and as quickly forthright as I can be whenever folks have a problem on the site. I also just want to say thanks to all of the really wonderful and supportive emails we've received with offers of help and understanding. If we can figure out a way to empower site users to have more power to fix issues or reliably raise specific issues we can then get onto we will let you know, your offers of help are quite humbling and appreciate.

Apologies if you feel insulted, you now knoiw how I've felt fpr months, being either completely ignored, having my phone blamed for multiple posts (when I pointed out this physically couldn't be the case it was back to dumb ignorance), having my email client blamed for text problems (not by you I hasten to add, but frankly I'll use whatever software I choose) and then reduced to total radio silence. Then when other people finally start complaining about things I've been raising for ages they get a response. See, I'm the one feeling very insulted, so welcome to my world.

I'm sure this must all hurt and you must have felt like you were hitting your head against a brick wall - but you and Mat are moblog and we were right to be worried and I'm afraid the flack will always land on your doorstep - you are the parent of this baby.

I do hope this amazing community can come up with some ideas to help you in this predicament and now I think we should take any further communication to the forum and proceed in a more business like fashion and leave Joker in peace.
