This is my personal blog, not a venue for saleable images. In fact, because it's here that I share things that are important to me with the members of the moblog community, photo quality's not my priority. Events, occasions, achievements, thoughts, trips and experiments - you'll find them all here. Contact me for the development version of my photo portfolio, for a selection of saleable images or visit my dance photography blog or my website for cuttings. And remember that all photos remain my copyright unless I've specifically said otherwise.

Between now and the Olympics I'm going to run a series of school children's photographic competitions. Winners will be exhibited and any money from exhibition sales will be divided between the school and a charity of the school's choice. Winners will also get cameras for their schools (Jacobs has already agreed to this) and I hope to be able to get their work published in a book.

If it all works out OK (and this bit is a big 'if') the finalists from the next 2-3 years of competitions will also be exhibited at the same time as the Olympics - less than 3 minutes walk from ExCeL. That's where the boxing, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling will be held.

I need help from others to do this justice. The equivalent of a couple of hours a week, a couple of days of sustained work or even a couple of hours a month. This is too big to do on my own, so I need you.

Can you help?

(I don't have any shots of UK school children so this image shows some of Medellin's underprivileged kids - on a special day out to where they learned more of the importance of their environment. I'm working on another project that I hope will benefit them)

Jesson says:

D- is this for the UK only or do you want to go international?

17th Jan 2009, 22:41

Dhamaka says:

Jesson I think the honest answer is it depends on the funding / sponsorship. We are right at the beginning of the project and until I got such a fantastic response from people (one potential sponsor already) I had been thinking that depending on the funding it could be as small as the East End of London or as large as UK wide. My current impression is that there is definitely enough interest to go UK wide.

I think if we were to go international it' would take another 6 months of planning and setting up etc. I'm not saying no, but it would require a quantum leap in terms of complexity, time required to manage and communicate.

Let me have a think - if you have any ideas that might help please send them over

18th Jan 2009, 08:55

Jesson says:

Why not be bold and think really big- contact your Olympic committee and put your plan to them- see what they suggest??? Olympic committees usually have all sorts of funding especially when its something that brings people together. They're often looking for community minded people with events management experience to have a go at something like this. Could also draw in sponsors if you can get the Olympic seal of approval.

18th Jan 2009, 10:20

Dhamaka says:

I'm sorry Jesson, I started writing a whole essay on why I don't think it's a good idea to get directly involved with the Olympics and what my other concerns would be but decided it wasn't appropriate. Then I realised there was a better response:

Anyone who would like to get the value proposition, business plan and proposal together for the Olympic committee, take it to them, run the world-wide project, find the sponsors, get the volunteers, get and confirm the venue, manage, run and promote the project is welcome to contact me as a starting point.

While I'd be happy to provide feedback I would not want to manage or participate directly. I've been there before and; while I may change my mind in the future, that kind of game is not for me at this moment in time.

18th Jan 2009, 14:51

Dhamaka says:

thought I'd add...

If someone reading this isn't willing or able to do that right now, but who likes the idea - ask me in 2013. By then, the experience will either have made me more enthusiastic or will have turned me off entirely.

18th Jan 2009, 16:03

Jesson says:

Fair enough, D. These things can take on a life of their own and become a bit unwieldy.

19th Jan 2009, 01:08

Dhamaka says:

you could say that..

24th Jan 2009, 13:43

Dhamaka says:

I'll be getting back to the volunteers privately later. Meanwhile anyone wanting to help in a fun, short term and easy way please join the group I've just created - 'dancing'
