Four wooden cart like this one (this is the biggest) get pulled on the road around the temple, carrying each of the four main gods. This is a long circuit, up and down hill.
It was pouring with rain that day.
This is the biggest car carrying Siva. The cart is pulled with huge chains, and slowed down by people standing on chains at the back, and wooden wedges are pushed under the edge of the wheels for steering. I'm told they fitted hydraulic brakes on recently. The cart is started with beams used as levers.
Here, the ladies are getting ready to pull and grab the chains on the left, while men pull the ones on the right.
