we had a bird doing that in the garden the other day - I thought it was dying and panicked about cats getting him - turns out he was just sunning himself and spreading his feathers and flew off when I went to investigate!

OCD Sprocket says:

they also "ant" themselves in the sun - the ants release an oil which helps protect their feathers.

paintist says:

from a british garden bird website...
"Blackbirds and other thrushes often sunbathe, laid down and with wings outstretched. The sun is thought to straighten the birds feathers and help the preen oil to spread through the feathers. Some ornithologists have suggested that it may also draw parasites to the surface where the bird can remove them or that the ultraviolet light in the sunlight converts chemicals in the preen oil into Vitamin D. However, one could be forgiven for thinking that they simply enjoy it."

I have also heard of 'anting' sprocket...but I think they were doing it because it was fun

I stayed around until he flew away in case a cat got him, he was acting quite drunk :-)

Just resting eh?

I presumed it was dead from the thumbnail too.

My cats display very similar behaviour. For the bird's sake I wouldn't want it to pick the same sunny spot...

suntanned birds? sunglasses and drinks with umbrellas are next.
