I wish they weren't all fierce & that, they're so darn cuddly...
Amazing, just amazing. And rather frightening too.
Were you in a vehicle?
Fantastic! I hear the BBC are looking for someome to fill in for Attenborough...
Thanks for the Highlight!
OJ; mercifully for my underwear, I was indeed inside a vehicle. We were in a converted school bus, but had I of stuck my camera any further out of the window it was close enough for me to have lost an arm! The hikes we did we made sure to talk very loudly so as to keep the bears away.
Carpe; they are pretty scary. I came face-to-face with a grizzly in Banff when I was collecting firewood a few years back, and despite being a good 12ft away, I was more than a little petrified.
Statistically speaking, they're not too dangerous. Over 80% of their diet is fruit and veg, and they only tend to attack if you display "prey tendencies" like running away. You're supposed to walk backwards slowly while waving you're arms and shouting so it knows you're human. On the rare occasion they charge you, they generally stop before hitting you if you stand your ground. Black bears are more dangerous as they will properly charge and occasionally stalk you, and Polars are more dangerous still as they'll actively hunt you. More people die from being charged by moose or caribou than being attacked by bears though.
Swampy; we saw 8 on the trip. They're everywhere out there!
Crickson; I don't think I have the soothing tones of Attenborough. It would be a dream job through no?
