The Metro newspaper printed this story today. If you have a look here you'll see that they did no research. Not only has this photo been around for years, but it's not true.

EDIT: They've now changed the article on the website to say it might be a hoax and deleted several comments berating them for not researching the article.

Spike says:

nige says:

wow, thats crazy. how could they print something like that.

23rd May 2008, 10:14

Kostika says:

Obviously jsut needed filler for the pages, but it's backfired on them something major. That picture is about 2 years old and old news to anyone on the internet.

I was flabbergasted when I saw that on the pages. I jsut couldn't believe how negligent they could be.

Caine says:

Heh. I remember seeing those pics, and seeing how the 'trick' was done. Amazing they could print this as if it was a real story, let alone recent.

The Guardian is running this one too.

I've emailed them. Lazy journos.

(and the Mail, and the Glasgow Record, and the Mirror, and the Torygraph)

God, it's pathetic, isn't it. What are journalists paid for again?

23rd May 2008, 12:54

Kostika says:

Oh dear god! Do all of these journos read the same blogs?

This is a minor story. Imagine if it was something important. Makes you wonder.

23rd May 2008, 13:04

mat says:

Well, quite.

I imagine they all read the same paper on their way into work in the morning. It is friday, after all. People can't be expected to make even the most cursory attempts at doing their damn jobs on a friday.

If I worked at Metro, I'd run a prize fund for who can get the most outrageous lie printed in the broadsheets.

i saw this yesterday, london lite or the london paper ran it too and i have seen the snopes page before and was appaled to see what they wrote. stupid papers!

is this still doing its rounds?
good grief!

Kostika says:

Not still, but again. And this time in the newspapers.

Christ. That is embarassing. I nearly choked on my lunch when I opened the Metro and saw that.

In defence of journalists, at least it proves the point that we don't spend all day on the internet....

Ahem.

23rd May 2008, 14:58

Alfie says:

or rather OJ, that journos don't spend *enough* time on t'internet :)

23rd May 2008, 15:01

OJ says:

Yep, not enough surfing time, that's the trouble.

Now's the time for me to opine "well actually I'm a producer".

But seriously, that is a clanger. I had to check that it wasn't 1st April when I saw it.
