This is my personal blog, not a venue for saleable images. In fact, because it's here that I share things that are important to me with the members of the moblog community, photo quality's not my priority. Events, occasions, achievements, thoughts, trips and experiments - you'll find them all here. Contact me for the development version of my photo portfolio, for a selection of saleable images or visit my dance photography blog or my website for cuttings. And remember that all photos remain my copyright unless I've specifically said otherwise.

A project - take 100 shots of people you've never met before. Ask their permission to do so.

I've not joined it for the stated aims (I often approach total strangers and ask if I can take their photos or show them what I've taken), but because I'm very uncomfortable with the idea of taking intensely personal candid photos. So I thought it would be interesting to explore the extent to which similar shots can be taken with the subjects' consent.

Anyway - these were from today.

Thank you!

540air says:

Is that a poster in the second one? Or just a really scary oversized head?

31st Mar 2008, 16:01

Dhamaka says:

It's a poster! I think that the fact that I waited so long to take the shot (till something interesting came up behind them) might have freaked them out a bit...

540air says:

I thought they were looking a little on the scared side and that maybe they had just noticed that he was about to eat them :)

they do look a tad uncomfortable, and yes I was wondering about that giant head as well...

any advice on taking pictures of strangers, dhamaka? do you think it's important to ask them first?

*grins at 540Air

thank you OJ

Billion - I think it's up to the individual, but I'm personally uncomfortable with the idea of taking shots that identify people without their permission, even though I appreciate some of the candid images I've seen.

I try to treat people the way I'd like to be treated. I don't always ask them in advance but I do normally let them know. I always show them what I have taken (if they want to see) and *always* ask if they'd like a copy (that got expensive in Argentina where less people have email). The only time the subjects said they weren't happy with what I had done I deleted the shot in front of them... and only one of the many people I've asked in advance has said no to date.

Nige - thank you, she really knew what she was doing!

Sprocket - yeah...

SFG - thank you and I thought so....

I like these, especially the 2nd shot. Interesting idea. I doubt I see anywhere near a hundred people each year, let alone a hundred strangers. ;)

Dhamaka says:

That has given me this picture of you driving for hours to mug people (with your camera of course) on the nearest motorway service station

2nd Apr 2008, 01:33

Caine says:

Hahaha. My best chance would be to haunt the Bismarck airport for a month or so. Keep in mind our airport is about the size of a postage stamp compared to others. :D
