Hotdog gets it in one! Don's grandparents, typical of their generation, were very tight with money, and when they moved in to this house the wood floors were in bad shape. So when Gup had a chance to grab some carpet sample books, he did, and that's what he carpeted the front bedroom with. The hideous orange* carpet in the next pic is also carpet squares that were going for a song (I wonder why?!) and Don's uncle, who is blind, and lived in that room, didn't exactly care about the colour - to him, it looks like a soft peach color.

*Keep in mind, I like orange, it's one of my favorite colours, but that stuff....oy.
