Hey I bought one of these this week. I'd heard one too many "lost it all in the crash" stories.

yep me too - and 50 Gig of images would be painful to lose.

taniwha says:

Exactly. It would be a huge chunk out of photos of my kids.

I can't help thinking about teh contrast between the 6 photos that exist of me when I was a child and the 100s of my children. This generation must be the most documented ever.

Yep, i had a friend who lost all of his first baby's pics as his raid array got trashed and he only had one physical copy of those files. I don't want that to happen to or when i do get a litlun.

I have read that we're producing 161 exabytes of information a year. and growing, that's obviously not just photos, but the proliferation of cheap digital imaging is upon us.

I have a similar thing set up, though it's a homebrew version :) I run 4 320gig disks in a raid 5 array, which gets rsync-ed to the internet every night...I think i'd jump off my house if I lost my photographs.

kyoob says:

what software do you use to sync - or is that homebrew too?

4th Jan 2008, 11:32

Joe says:

I use rsync, which is an awesome piece of linux software, it just synchronizes any changes, so only the first sync is big. after that, the syncs are only as large as any new files I add to the array

not sure if there is a windows equivalent...

I got me a big external HD too, now I worry about what happens if that goes wrong.

it's all about the Drobo. too tired to do a linky, but worth the check out for any of us who take alot of photos. this negates the need for RAID, but your setup does sound good Joe.

robotic storage. sweet.
