Yep - beech woods in autumn are a big favourite, Oz the dog was nearly delirious with the all the scents & sudden scurryings in the undergrowth. Thankfully, when we spotted a red deer immobile & very close by, poor old Oz couldn't see her over a handy drystone wall, or we'd have had a whole new definition for "drag hunt".

It's up near Whaley Bridge Viv, Very similar to your neck of the woods - narrow, wooded river valleys, gritstone for building, & sheep on the high slopes.
