Alfie says:

Oh it really is. It's about a very good, ascerbic writer's descent into LA hell in essence, having lost his family through mostly having been up his own arse.

Duchovny really excels in this role too, his strength has always been in the low key delivery of incredibly funny commentary, and very subtle physical acting.

This is a must watch show for sure.

But it's so hard to get through even one episode without wanting to hold Hank's head in a bucket of sump oil until the bubbles stop.
A whole series of whining misogyny? Nah, spare me - we've only just got rid of Bernard Manning.

Alfie says:

So you equate his particular brand of screwed up self obsessed hating everyone because most people are wankers brand of humour with whiny misogyny? Good to know.

hildegard says:

I equate the style & tone of the show with misogyny.
Just so you know what I mean.

Alfie says:

It depends I think entirely on ones level of immersion. If you take it as given that that *is* the nature of that lifestyle, that place, then it seems to me to be both natural and *right* to be what it is, which is not to say that any misogyny portrayed *is* right, or is even intended by the writers or producers to be interpreted as anything other than cultural commentary. Duchovny's masterful wit and natural acting ability are more than a balm against that for me anyway.

When does it start? Might have to give it a go.

They were trailing it in our local cinema - thought I'd give it a whirl

We've had it in Aus for a few weeks and we're getting a bit bored with Duchovny and his mysoginistic, user ways. Sex on screen might shock Americans but it gets all a bit boring after the first few times. There's precious little story in it and I worry for the kid on the show. She really is being exposed to behaviour that is totally unsuitable for a child to be seeing.
