Hamilton is still churning out the doorstops, eh? I should put the Neutronium Alchemist back on my reading list - I did start it, and enjoyed it a lot, but left it in a bus station somewhere and never got back to it.

As for Gibson. Well. Someone's getting old and running out of ideas, last I read, although wouldn't surprise me if he turned it around.

I wouldn't say he's running out of ideas. Pattern Recognition was fantastic. Reviews of Spook Country haven't been the best but a friend has read it and said it was very good. So we'll have to see.

I don't think Hamilton could not produce doorstops. It's what he's good at. And by all accounts this one is supposed to be very good also.

Fair enough. I haven't read much recent Gibson, but he was certainly - in my opinion - tailing off by Virtual Light.

I've been getting into Neal Asher of late. He does epic space opera in the style of Iain M Banks, but with a distinctly biological bent. Gripping. Have also picked up some Stephen Baxter (late to that party, I know), which is also very good.

Kostika says:

Gibson changed faces with his recent works compared to the old stuff like Virtual Light and Neuromancer. The new stuff is still very Gibson, but still very different.

I love Stephen Baxter.

Have you read any of the Deathstalker series? They are space opera to the extreme and I love them.

I agree with Kostika on Gibson. Really enjoyed the last one. Hamilton gets a bit black for me sometimes. I like Asher and will get these tomorrow - thanks for the reminder Kos
