The Flare burns off either side of the Rig depending on wind direction, and is for the safe dispersal of natural gas found whilst drilling through the sea bed looking for oil. Ferocity depends on the pressure behind the gas escaping,sometimes it's quite dissapointing when all you see is the 'Pilot' lights and a few whisps of flame.
Incidently the fan of water is one of many used to cool the side of the Rig from the heat which is pretty intense believe me!

Thanks for Highlight! They turned out much better than I had ever expected considering they were taken with my Phone!
Usually never get to take pictures on modern Rigs as the fire detectors inside are so sensitive they are triggered by the smallest thing so camera's are usually banned.
....but not in Africa!
