One of two shops in Tamil Nadu where you can still get photo paper.
They are both on the same street, in Chennai. Anywhere else, you will
be told, "not possible! Digital only!"

Laxman and I had an adventure full of coincidences and unexpected
encounters in 3 cities, including Pondicherry and Chennai, to find a
supplier. Phoning around doesn't do, because they don't understand our
English and I don't understand theirs yet. So you have to go there, try
and talk to everyone, and find a clue towards the next step.

At this shop, I found not only paper but also chemicals. The developer
was in a box with instructions (in English). For the rest, the guy
dived in large sacks and plonked 3 little unlabelled plastic bags of
powder and crystals on the counter.

"What's this?" I said.
-This what you need.
-But what's in the bags?
-Photo chemicals. This what you need".
After more probing, we found that the shop were "only selling", and
didn't have a clue as to what was in the bags.

Eventually, after going round some more shops, someone arranged for us
to go to his photography school to receive some advice, a private
school in a private house in a distant leafy suburb. The founder and
director welcomed us in his deluxe designer office, where I lined up
the sachets, making dust traces on his shiny glass desk. He told us,
"No no no, it's digital now. This is no longer practiced".

But he remembered, searching his memory for remnants of a distance
past, that the crystals were probably "hypo", the fixer.

We were on our way.
