It was fascinating to see the traces of paint on the carvings in the Ely Cathedral! The colours were usually more faded than you see in the roof bosses. I guess being so high off the ground it was safe from human hands, or perhaps out of direct sunlight.
There was an Adam and Eve carved in the centre of the ceiling.Perhaps this is a serpent?
I knew from reading that the roof bosses often retold stories from the Bible. There are amazing sculptural roof bosses in the Cathedral in Norwich, for example.
Is it a dragon?
And it does look rather at odds with the unpainted ceiling .....
that is one fine ceiling. The cathedral is really impressive, even now to my contemporary eyes. I like to imagine in medieval times what a psychedelic trip the colours would have been when it was all painted up, with the sun coming through the stained glass windows.
