I make things on the web, mobile and in the actual world.

I've done lots of bits and bobs over the years, and right now I'm mostly working on this.

I enjoy speaking about things I like, most recently this. You can email me if you'd like, and I'm on twitter.

the only thing i can say is that i don't think you need sudo if you're logged in as root, but i don't know how this would help...

i think you should download ubuntu on someone elses computer and then reinstall it from your disk drive. you might have access to your data then as well.

looks like it's something to do with the drive config in your bios, it's mounting your root filesystem in read only, which usually means theres a conflict, or your HD is carked...which is unlikely if all you did was add a cd drive.

Is the BIOS recognising the CD-ROM drive?

If the CD drive is actually working, I'd start with trying to boot something Knoppix-like. Slackware Frodo or KillBill or some such....

thanks guys - fixed it! I finally managed to get fsck to run manually, and after much cloning of bits my puta is fine again!

Still, actually easier to fix than had I been running windows I wager.

Hit it with something hard!
Then buy a new one.
That's what I did, after trying turning it off and then back on again.
A vast improvement.

*gets coat too*

Cheers AAH, yeah, that's one of the funniest things I've ever seen tbh, hence the long-standing linkage in my sidebar.
