hello, my name is al. i make music by myself and with a band called the fictive kinship. i work in an office in london on railway related stuff and cycle to work every day. i love cooking, swimming and riding my bike all over london. i try to eat well, write good songs and not drink too much. i don't always succeed.

played a gig at the metro last night with the tacticians. great lineup of:

- the standards (top)

- the subliminal girls (sharp shoes, bottom)

- the tacticians

- havanna guns

i got "styled" by maria before the gig and i think i ended up looking like a eurotrash 50s throwback. worse than that, like a eurotrash 50s throwback from the 80s. two kinds of denim? are you sure? anyway i kept my mouth shut and played ball. well bass anyway. all the bands were great last night. the standards are pure pop fun. like squeeze or the knack. kind of cheesy but totally wonderful.

the subliminal girls were great (and won the best shoes award by a mile). kind of art brut meets duran duran. clever, silly and strangely charming. i'll definitely be seeking them out to play gigs with daddy long legs.

the tacky's gave it a good go but the sound wasn't up to much and i totally f*ucked up the twiddly bit in the middle of born to run (putting everybody else off in the process) *shame*. the guy from the label told them they should drop it as an encore anyway. i'm pretty happy with that as the joke wore kind of thin after last time to be honest. i bet they still play it when he's not about. hehe, weirdos. apart from that i thought we played okay. not as well as saturday but hey ho.

the havanna guns are possibly the best looking band i've ever seen. all of them like supermodel hott. weird. it's basically cleverly produced and fairly minimal indie pop. the problem was that if i can't hear the vocals (which i couldn't) then i'm going to need some kind of harmonic or rhythmic interest to keep my attention, and 4 minutes of "A to D" doesn't really do that for me... i blame the velvet underground for this kind of thing. speaking of which, the keyboard player looks uncannily like nico. the german accent doesn't detract from that impression either. i might love these guys if i could hear what the unfeasably beautiful singer was singing but as i couldn't... i didn't.
