oh, also from Wikipedia, but I remember my great-uncle (who lived in Clifton most of his life) telling me this story when I was a kid: "In 1885, a 22 year old woman called Sarah Ann Henley survived a fall from the bridge when her billowing skirts acted as a parachute, and subsequently lived into her eighties." I was told it was low tide at the time too, so she landed in the soft mud rather than the drowning river.
