A friend of mine (and Caine's as well) has four of them, a black male, a Landseer (black & white) female, a black female and a brown female. They adopted the Landseer through Newfie rescue and then discovered she was pregnant - the other girls are two of her puppies, and one is brain damaged like Bandit. There were 11 puppies total - can you imagine?
11 Newfies in one litter? Good grief! I didn't know that was possible.
Was the brain damage caused by birth trauma?
No, a birth defect - hydroencephaly. The mom wasn't treated well by the person who had her before my friend though, so it may have had something to do with that.
Oh, the world record, last I knew, was a litter of 22 - a Rottweiler. And no, in litters that big all the pups usually do not make it as they are too tiny.
I had a Newfie. Once. Her name was Nana. She dragged a kid out of the road out of the way of a car. When it got hot, she would take herself off and just sit in the stream. All day. Newfies are special. and big.furry. drooly.:)
Nana was the Newfoundland in Peter Pan, no? Not surprised to learn that the rescue instinct works on dry land too. :)
On of my greatgrandmother's had a newfie when I was a sproglet. Now I have my half newf, Cachet.
Swimming is absolutely her most favourite thing in the universe. She lives for it. We call her crocodile when she's in the water.
I would love the space to own a pair of these, they are fantastic, in fact I'd like to go and live in Newfoundland!
I figure most of the people on this blog would do very well in Newfoundland.
Hm... just to visit, SR; get a bit anxious if I have to go far for quince cheese or an art cinema. Places like Cheshire or the Home Counties are about my speed - nowhere more than an hour by train from a branch of Vidal Sassoon... ;)
