"Non-motorized" snowmobile tracks

This is the Mesabi Trail. The Mesabi Trail is solely intended for use by bicycles and other non-motorized vehicles. Look at the pretty snowmobile tracks!

Don't people follow the rules up there?

From my experience around here, I would say, usually rules are considered to be off-hand suggestions. :)

well they can just as well snowmobile on it. Ive olny ever seen maybe 5 bikes on that trail since they built it. it was a nice peice of pork barrel spending by Jim Oberstar though.

When is the last time you biked the Mesabi Trail? Last time I went from Gilbert to Hibbing on the trail, I saw hundreds of other bicyclists!

And as far as "built" it isn't past tense yet, my friend. It is still a work in progress. Stretches like McKinley to Biwabik just bypass onto the shoulder of Highway 135.

I would like to see more fundraisers and commercial ventures funding this project. If tax money is going to build it, then it should be free to use, like public libraries. Since the Mesabi Trail requires a Trail Pass, I guess its not vital enough to be considered a public service all tax payers have a right to use; on that line of reasoning, I suppose tax money should not have been used to build it in the first place.

All I know about it for sure is that it is a good trail, and I would like to see it extended to span the size of the original plan which includes the entire Iron Range.

I know that alot, of the money for it came from federal grants. i didnt even know you are supposed to pay to use it. thats just preposterous.. but what can you do?

I'm not surprised you haven't seen many people on that stretch. It's currently a dead end spur of the trail. It just stops at the intersection of Hwy 20 and Hwy 135 near McKinley. I have heard that it will be connected to Biwabik sometime in the next 2 years, along with the connection from giants ridge to Tower.

To be clear, I'm not against sharing this resource with snowmobilers. Most of the trail is designated multi-use, but the non-motorized sections have pavement that is not designed to handle snomobile traffic, and I would like to see the Mesabi Trail last as long as possible. It would be a shame to be replacing pavement on the trail efore the entire length is completed.

I am simply opposed the way it was funded, with earmarked money added in by the chairman of the house transportation comittee. its really not the kind of project the federal government should be involved in.
