Well it is now dead, so you can have it seaneboy.

*nb I didn't kill it. It was playing chicken on the pavement.

6th Oct 2006, 15:06

Steve says:

Did you mug him for his pound? Did you happy slap a bee and take pictures of it?? Bad OJ

6th Oct 2006, 15:14

OJ says:

LOL. Why didn't I think of that?

Pound belonged to a colleague, who didn't bat an eyelid when I demanded a coin for bee photography on the way to the sandwich shop....

6th Oct 2006, 15:15

a pound is a lot of money for a bee. about 6 weeks wages...

6th Oct 2006, 15:17

Steve says:

"Will work for honey"

6th Oct 2006, 16:59

OJ says:

Begging bee.... Perhaps that's why I subconsciously put the queen's head in the picture. Aha.

6th Oct 2006, 18:42

MaggieD says:

But that is a Bubbly bee .... I love Bumbly Bees .... Bees mean Honey .... Hate to think he came to a sticky end ...

6th Oct 2006, 20:44

I've discussed this with an apiarist, and this is sadly NOT the world's biggest bee. the biggest bee in the world weighs 200lbs, which makes your pound coin look a bit paltry in comparison, and, according to the guinness book of records, dead bees don't count, or was it dead bees can't dance?

6th Oct 2006, 23:36

Steve says:

White bees can't jump

6th Oct 2006, 23:44

OJ says:

Just for clarification, the bee wasn't dead at this point. It was wiggling its legs...

7th Oct 2006, 13:40

crickson says:

200 lbs! 200 lbs! You are fecking kidding!

7th Oct 2006, 17:29

anonymous says:

I think he might be crickson.... that's bigger than me!

7th Oct 2006, 19:14

OJ says:

^^ Ahem, that was me.

I consulted a natural history curator today (not specifically about this you understand!) who said it was probably a Queen Bumble Bee. It's about the time of year they tend to be out and about as they prepare to hibernate. So Gael was spot on there. Queen Bee.

9th Oct 2006, 14:52

jle says:

the poor queen bee, but who will take over? that is the cutest thing i have seen though, its easier to look at them from a photograph, bravo to you for zooming in so close =)

12th Oct 2006, 16:24

OJ says:

I'm not frightened of bees JLE, they don't sting unless attacked. Wasps are another matter.

Anyway, I think this one was dying by the time I found her.
