The problem is that the bottom of supercell storms can look a great deal like mammatus, especially if they develop in mountainous regions, and especially at night when they are reflecting ground-based light. I remember more than one time as a kid staying up all night watching fantastic lightning displays and wondering when the power would come back when these massive storms would create downdrafts that would knock trees into power lines all over the county - and spawn an occasional tornado, as well.

Not mammatus clouds, although I have seen them here (and mini-funnel clouds) on occasion. Nothing much came of these, which were on the trailing edge of a weather system at the end of a wet day :)
