i had this pic sitting on my desktop and for some reason it just dawned
on me that he turned 49 a couple of weeks ago. one of my favourite
directors, and, alongside Almodovar, the director who inspired me to
study film in the first place. belated birthday bashes & beats to: Spike

i really like the way he uses actors - and he's really diversified with his recent subject matters. Inside Man is very good, I think.

Spike Lee is da man. Remember seeing 'She's Gotta have it' in '87 at some small dingy indie cinema in London. Watching 'Do The Right Thing' when it seemed Hollywood would really burn and PE were really shakin' things up stateside and we were all fighting da power. Da majestic 'Malcolm X' made me respect Malik Shabaz even more. Even his lesser films and shorts have been inspirational and he has truly provided da cinematic backdrop to my life.

do the right thing didnt even get much love at the oscars that year - i think the academy thought it too controversial. it had to suffice with best script and best supporting actor (danny aiello). deserved of much more, i think.

I show that piece from da film where Radio Raheem (played by Bill Nunn) gets killed and the da riot that happens, to young people I work with to show how quickly conflicts can develop. Will check out Inside Man soon.
