"We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered." - Guildenstern, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

Bah, a lot of fuss about nothing if you ask me, putting RAM in iMacs is easy, same with most macs. Try putting a hard disk in an iBook :)

but most macs have little sections that open out where you put the ram, this is an imac g5 as it looks and for that you just take the whole back off and everything is exposed, it is a little daunting if you ask me

nah, I take the backs off iMacs all the time at work, theres 3 screws at the bottom that you unscrew, and they're fixed so it's not like they can fall out or anything, then you just lift the back off. It's a piece of cake, so long as you don't touch the contacts on your shiny new RAM module, or like fry your computer/body with static :)

pahtlor: I did, in fact, not ask you, but alas. It was the first time I opened my iMac, and since it is a very expensive (to me) piece of hardware, I was very careful about it.

You are right, however. It was really easy. I, however, did not know that before I started.

thats why i said it was daunting, the first time i changed stuff in any of my mac i was a little worried the first time as if they break thats an expencive bit of kit that you just killed my G£ cost nothing much so im not that bothered but if id done anything like it to any of the other ones i would cry

Well done! I've never been inside a Mac. On the other hand, I've built every PC I've owned from scratch :)

I was very nervous with the first one, I should add :D

Sorry, the end of my previous comment but one reads a bit more abruptly than I intended. There is a lot more latitude with PC construction and the parts tend to be cheaper and more interchangeable than for Macs. I'd be much more nervous poking around inside a Mac :)

believe me, I was, but it was very, very easy. The only tricky part was snapping the back back on - there are EIGHT!! of those little latches at the top, and one bigger one on each side. I was afraid of breaking them, but it all worked out in the end. :)

Sorry, I realise it's scary the first time, but as you say once you're over the "shit, I'm inside my precious mac" bit then it's a piece of cake :)

This is from when I put a 100GB Hard Disk in my PowerBook, it took ages, although the only bit I remember finding scary was having to pull they keys off the keyboard to unscrew it, the main thing was just how long it took!
