Spike says:

which paper is it in?

13th Feb 2006, 09:14

sslovetub says:

Metro, freeby paper, you'll find one on the seat of most buses

13th Feb 2006, 09:16

Spike says:

ahhh so the title is relevant, im not a commuter any more!

13th Feb 2006, 09:18

sslovetub says:

Me either. I quite miss it. With it being free you might expect it to be pretty average but it's one of the best daily papers for all round interesting stories and general jibber jabber IMHO

13th Feb 2006, 09:23

Twiglet says:

I dunno. They stopped doing that cryptic crossword last year.......bastards!

13th Feb 2006, 09:25

ooo i might pick one of them up on the way home, give it a read

13th Feb 2006, 09:42

alfie says:

It's in all the Metro editions in the UK too, :D

I must admit that Helens Beths! 'mugshot' is my fave :D

nice one everyone.

jc1000000 says:

Wicked article as well! Gonna blog my tube journey right now - love was all around :-)

BTW that mug shot was taken by beth. (and damn lovely it is too. Gotta say that Lazlo's noughts and crosses pic is one of my faves too.

13th Feb 2006, 10:14

beth says:

thanks for the correction JC :)

And this is just a question that me and helen pondered on over our crumpets this morning - if i submit a photograph to a public/competition blog does that affect its ownership?

13th Feb 2006, 10:54

crickson says:

Just seen the article - well done all!

13th Feb 2006, 11:23

OJ says:

Did Metro pay you to use the picture Beth? They should have at least sought permission.

13th Feb 2006, 11:32

FilbertFox says:

well done all, must get hold of a copy

13th Feb 2006, 11:33

alfie says:

I've emailed Mat about our oversight - perhaps it's not an oversight and I just can't find it on the site. We discussed ages ago how best to license images on shared / competition moblogs. We didn't want to give the people we do comps for ownership of images everyone sends in, and at the same time, it is difficult to say the least to *call* the licensing type any one user may or may not use on their personal moblog.

We decided it made the most sense to use a creative commons license on all images sent in to shared/competition moblogs, whilst the original poster still maintains their own copyright or other license type of the image, others can use the images.

I'm fairly certain this was discussed publically somewhere, but I cant seem to find anything on it at the moment. I emailed Mat so hopefully he'll be awake soon.

13th Feb 2006, 11:37

OJ says:

If you specify the use you (Moblog) will make of the images in the competition Terms and Conditions then you're covered. You can specify what you like (e.g. publicity use, like this) and make competition submission equal agreement to your rules. At a first quick pass I can't see your T&Cs; though so maybe you just need to make them more prominent.

Well done on getting the publicity. I've not seen Metro today, but Beth's coffee mug pic is a favourite. I liked it when she first posted it on her own blog, and I still like it now. Enduring love is about weathering the humdrum, tedious and painful parts of life IMHO, like the washing up arguments! Hearts and flowers are just window dressing. I couldn't compose an image to express this, but I think Beth's does.

13th Feb 2006, 11:54

beth says:

OJ.. what you said is lovely and very eloquent. Thank you.

And yes Alfie, you know me. I'm not too worried. I don't know if i was credited or not (I'll be sad if it's credited to someone else, but feh.. it happens), I'm really happy to have had my photo publicised as an asset to moblog but would worry it might cause you some issues with people a little less involved with the whole moblog spirit :) .. Or in the instance of someone being approached to buy an image? I guess moblog is saying they don't own the image but, surely if it's posted to a public blog you've every right to use that image in certain forms..blah i never did get any of this stuff, it's partly why i never entered any of my animations into any competitions, the copyright and ownership just got too complicated for my little head.

13th Feb 2006, 12:49

seaneeboy says:

Thanks all, and thanks for the highlight! WAs well chuffed to see it, well done AFD etc.

I *do* have a spare copy, should anyone want one?

13th Feb 2006, 15:29

goode says:

i'd like to read it!

13th Feb 2006, 16:39

seaneeboy says:

Goode - just edited the post for a link to a scan :)

13th Feb 2006, 16:41

goode says:

mega!

13th Feb 2006, 16:42

Helen says:

Pfft. None of those pictures are Steve's!

The tomato and puddle heart are mine, the tree is Gael's and the hearts and crosses is Laszlo's... or however that's spelt.

Benji's in the Metro, haha.

13th Feb 2006, 17:41

alfie says:

arrrr, Steve didnt get a look in with his qwality posts, now there's a first ;)

13th Feb 2006, 17:43

OJ says:

Have just had a look and none of the pics are credited.

At risk of sounding snippy, I'd just be grateful that page was written by a real journalist rather than compiled by robot as many of the "news" pages generally appear to be.... ;-)

13th Feb 2006, 17:56

alfie says:

Yeah, they really should have been credited at the least, as I told the picture desk.

13th Feb 2006, 18:03

mat says:

*yawn*

Right. As I understand this*, Metro are in breach of copyright. Becuase there is no alternative license displayed on the page, images remain copyright to the people who took them. the reason no CC license appears on the page is due to the way this shared moblog was created. ie, incorrectly. My bad. But more Metro's Bad, they broke the law..

Stupid journos. Beth/Helen/Gael/Laz, you may sue 'em. If you wish. I wouldn't bother, but I would phone 'em up and demand apology+credit in the next issue (but then that's the kind of guy I am..)

* Bearing in mind that I Am Not A Lawyer.

13th Feb 2006, 18:11

alfie says:

spot on Mat.

I Am Not A Lawyer = IANAL

best acronym in history? :D

13th Feb 2006, 18:24

seaneeboy says:

s'a bit early for you to be up isn't it mat?

13th Feb 2006, 19:21

mat says:

I'm an official insomniac. Chances are, I'll still be awake when you get up for work tomorrow. yer cheeky git. :)

13th Feb 2006, 19:49

Twiglet says:

Mat is the Prince of darkness.

13th Feb 2006, 19:57

Heheehe.. i saw this when i picked up the Metro this morning!! I was thinking.. hmmm where have i seen this before?? Until i read the text!!! Was about to wake up the person sitting next to me and announce i'm on MoBlogUK!! hehe.. i wouldnt dare!! Yayy Moblog!! =)

13th Feb 2006, 20:12

Thas so cool! I heard from Tis_Chlaraface! The nutter!!! I don't take LT no more but I wanna check with my mom to see if she got a copy.

Congrats to... who's pic was that from? But yeah Congrats MOBLOGGERS! We made it on The Metro!!!

BUT HOLD ON! Can they publish pics without consent! NO THEY CAN'T!!! It's not so much a bad thing but still though. Hmmm?? Having 2 minds about this!

13th Feb 2006, 23:37

Helen says:

Seanee... you shouldn't have crossed out Beth, the mug shot is hers!

13th Feb 2006, 23:39

I'm not particularly inclined to sue anyone because the Metro isn't trying to make money directly off the image I supplied. They get money from their advertisers, I'm guessing, but they aren't charging people for a lookie at the pikkie, which would be where I draw my line.

For that matter, I didn't credit the person who painted the hearts and crosses on the door, but I do intend to tape a copy of this page to said door as soon as it arrives. :)

14th Feb 2006, 10:46

540air says:

Way too confusing for my poor brain, but well done moblogUK anyway!!!!

14th Feb 2006, 11:39

Helen says:

I agree with Laszlo... however, if it were the Daily Mail...

*raises eyebrows*

14th Feb 2006, 11:41

Helen says:

Sh*t, the Metro are owned by the Daily Mail.

What to do?

And nobody consulted Benji.

14th Feb 2006, 11:41

alfie says:

The problem is basically that although I told the metro they were free to use the images (copyrght commons), they needed to credit the individual authors they chose to use. They screwed up. If any of you guys want to take it up with them that is entirely your right.

14th Feb 2006, 11:48

seaneeboy says:

Metro may be owned by the mail, but amazingly it's not a big bunch of wank... It's an endless surprise to me, but perhaps I should be encouraged rather than suspicious...

14th Feb 2006, 12:01

Helen says:

I don't really mind, people would only have bugged me about it and this way I got to add to my stock of things that make me look like a compulsive liar:

"Seen the Metro?"
"Yeah"
"Saw the tomato?"
"Yeah"
"That's my tomato"
"Oh"
"And my dog and my washing up, but Beth took that picture... and that's my friend Gael's picture of a tree"
...
"How do we know that that's your tomato?"
"I can get my phone out if you like..."
"Nah, it's ok, you could have downloaded it...see this picture of an Italian festival, that's mine that is and that's me on a snowboard..."

See, a whole 10 minutes of painful amusement would have been lost.

I'm not sure about the accusation of addiction (and if I have an addiction do I have a right to take Moblog breaks at work to satisfy my addiction, like the smokers?), or being told that a heart and a puddle meant something special to me. I ate the tomato, it was quite good. But not special.

And hey, one miniute we're camera phone addicts and the next we're "budding camera phone users", which suggests to me a slightly different level of expertise.

Poor journalist, I'll leave 'em alone, they probably only took five minutes over the article and they didn't do too badly.

I don't mind. I know that they are my pictures and I got a photo taken on a t68i into a national.

14th Feb 2006, 12:02

Gael says:

I've come very late to this but ...
I was just chuffed to see my pic there (and staggered cos it's crap) got a little glow that I was there with the others, though.
And I'd love a hard copy of the paper, has anyone got one?
If not, maybe I'll contact Metro like Mat says and stamp my foot until they give me a special, framed edition ; )
(in lue of me suing them for embarassing me by highlighting one of my crappiest pics)

EDIT and I don't own a mobile phone, it's a digi (and I'm getting vibes that people don't like that - is this becoming a two-tier site - with anti digital bias? - if so I'm off, I thought it was about 'community' etc. etc. but ... apparently not)

1st Mar 2006, 23:26

alfie says:

oooooooOOOOOOOOOOH! :D

Of course its about community, the device is not important. but is is too... this is a moblogging site, but we dont really go out of our way to define it as such too much, what's far more important is that it is a community site; we might just as well be sharing knitting patterns uploaded in binary. If you're using a digicam and sharing your stuff, thank you! If you using a camphone to do it, nice one! if your not even ever posting a pic but commenting on peoples posts, lovely!

but! wanna buy a cameraphone Gael? ;)

1st Mar 2006, 23:39

Gael says:

Yes!
But i haven't any dosh and I'd want a good one
Just ignore me, feeling a bit cranky

:D funny, you up for saturday then to help with a united fron in the face of mounting Leeds based sarcy-ness?

Have fun though, give Geodyne a hug from me
