My Pet Hate:
is TUESDAY, everything that has ever gone wrong in my life has happened on a TUESDAY! I hate it, it's now my day off so that i don't have to face the world! Don't make me have to suffer TUESDAY by asking me about it!!! I also dislike girls who drink pints, smoke and generally act like men!!

Goode bro have same probs using both firefox and IE with 4-8mb Bulldog connection. Any suggestions techies?
It's a load of cock!
Mine slows down too, has done for a while, and it gets worse if I look at shared blogs or Terra's page! I have no idea why??? although the terra/shared blog thing does not happen when I use other peoples wireless connection, only my home one?
For me it seems to be a FireFox problem! or Moblog Server! Afterall the servers are in Texas and it's peak surfin' time about now over there, isn't it? But works fine in IE.. it really pisses me off!
Grrr arg!
Actually, I haven't had a problem for a few days... Lucky me I guess...
GREAT VIDEO!
Many thanks, video made out of pure frustration!
I was fine up until about an hour ago... can't sign in and can only use the site in IE!
*face gets more red*
very true! gutted! it's mighty slow right now! HUFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!
:(
possibly related to FF 1.5's bfcache function, a few people have been reporting memory useage of over 500meg...workaround here:
www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=175007152&pgno;=5
Aaaahh!! Its not just me! Thanks for the post Goode (and a good video too), its highlighted what is obviously quite a common problem.
it reduces the amount of data from the back/forward pages being cached Darren, so reduces the memory used by firefox..moblog is a high media site and so the cached pages can tend to be quite big.
E_S yes moblog is currently based on one dedicated Linux based machine, which is of a good spec, and all useage data shows relatively low loads, or did last time I spoke to mat about it.
This problem is weirding me out. The server (dual Xeon, 512Mb RAM) isn't being loaded very heavily (I'm watching it right now), certainly not enough to cause a slowdown.
The problem seems to affect some people while other people are fine, which suggests it's not a server problem (otherwise it would affect everyone). People say that other sites work fine, so it's not their connection. IE seems to work where Firefox doesn't, yet the problem doesn't hit all installations of Firefox (otherwise I'd see it now), despite the fact we're mostly all running the same version (1.5)
Computers aren't supposed to work like this.
FYI: the webserver process is currently using 6.6% of one CPU, and 0.1% of available memory. The main point of stress on the server is actually the database server, not the webserver, but even that is only doing 16% cpu, 10% ram.
Mat, if it matters I know it's been way slow both for me, and for Geodyne for weeks. Some days it works fine, but about 60% of the time or so I'm having the same problem. *shrug*
Interestingly it *isn't* slow like that from Boingo, only from Chuck.
I went to joes link and this happened :(
Not blaming you though Joe :)
you should blame me, I built a destroy all macs script into that page.
Well done it works well :)
I really have never had that before, but it gave my machine a good and proper kicking
oops! i'm not sure that joes link would help anyway! all you'd have to do it limit the MB of cache that FF saves, no?
that's a point - how much ram has your machine got?
that it stores in memory, not that it saves. reducing the amount of system memory FF uses will reduce the load on your machine, and should speed it up.
admitedly, I do get intermitently slow responses from moblog when other sites are ok though...so it's not a solution, just a possible help.
Just noticed that it was all a great deal faster when I wasn't logged in! but that could be a coincidence.
hmmm that might be something... but it's prob got somethign to do with the site and cookies and stuff, processes.... etc etc! i don;t know?! the site need to think more if you are logged in!?
I expect it does, but that is far beyond my kind of knowledge, I still think that Mat employs elves to keep this place working
It was really slow for me yesterday and a few days before that.
I am running IE and on both the laptop and PC on high speed it won't load. We tried everything and just got annoying.
Today I did notice a few slow patches, but only for a short period.
also a few days ago the same thing happened.
Nice video goode, that was how I was feeling yesterday...
that's why i made the video! poor ratings though compared to page views!
I don't rate postings generally, mainly because I don't tend to use ratings as a guide, have you seen some of the "10's" in the top blog section? there is some real rubbish!
Hmm...I must be one of the lucky ones. I've not had any problems at all. Either from work or home. And work only has an 8mb connection with alot of traffic across it.
I haven't noticed any problem. I am with a 64K connection and a 384K at home, but the site still loads fine (FF@Windows)
Personally - I hate the rating stuff. Every time I think about taking it off though, someone pipes up about how much they like it. It's actually on the list to be improved.
I can't even remember the last time I rated anything.
I rate things occasionally.
Re the slowness : slow in Florida on occasion too and I have a T1.
Back to point - I've been using IE for a couple of days and it seems to be suffering from the slowness too...
Back to point - I've been using IE for a couple of days and it seems to be suffering from the slowness too...on broadband
(sorry - lag gave double post!)
anyone tried it on IE7? I installed last night, seemed to be fine for a while then slowed down??.....
I'm using the latest version of Firefox both at home and work. Still no slowness though.
I'm on FF 1.5, IE 6 (Reverted from IE Beta7)
Still a little slow, but a lot better today!
