It's amazing that Norwich and Cambridge are so close, yet the weather there is markedly stronger than here.

Lovely stuff.

I think the reason for the bonkers shapes (and for the ones in your barrel too) is due to the way crystals grow - on top of itself. as the temperature drops to 0*c it doesn't all just instantly freeze at the same time - it affects the edges first as there's less kinetic energy at atomic level (so they're not bashing about, but slow down enough to "set") once this has started, it has a knock on effect, building on top of itself.

This also kinda explains how the Water Butt (hehehehe) ice formed - it started at the edge of the barrel and went inwards, hence will have grown bit by bit - I imagine the temperature dropped a lot lower a lot more quickly in that case though, hence less derivation as in these pics.

This is all from a very fuzzy knowledge of university physics that I failed, but it makes sense to me.

very strange things go on in narj. yesterday i was walking through town and this fat old bitch on a motorised scooter with a big 'tache and a fag in her hand drove right into me and my newly purchased Starbucks mugs for Xmas presents! I felt like shouting 'BUTTER MY ARSE, GET UP AND WALK YOU LAZY FUCKER!'
Sadly, I didn't.
