Hey, this all looks so familiar, I spent 6months with the UN in Cyprus, patroling the 'green line', wayway back in '81
I love the place, we're going back next summer.

Did you get to explore the green line properly? That must have been fairly interesting. The UN bits in Nicosia seem fairly deserted now and the border has been left to the National Service kids to patrol. I did see one UN soldier wandering through the streets in full uniform.

The Greeks seem to be putting a lot of effort into doing the area around the green line up. They're doing a very good job. Hopefully you'll notice quite a difference by the time you get there.

When I was there things were very tense indeed.
We patrolled down narrow streets where, on the upper floors, windows had been completely barricaded with just a gun barrel sticking through on each side, muzzles almost touching, Greeks on one side, Turks on the other.
Our job was just to ensure the Status Quo was maintained, no side gaining any (further) advantage over the other in any given situation.
Out in the countryside there are acres and acres of minefields.
This was of course 25 years ago, and more, not sure how they're getting along these days.

(ps, sorry it took me three years to reply to this, hectic schedule, so much on, you know the way it is)
