Homeward bound

(viewed 1388 times)
Well, I'm actually home now, I meant to post this from Nagoya airport or Dubai but neither had an access point I could use :-)

The thirty-six hours of travelling was uneventful: no luggage got lost, and nothing was delayed. In fact both flights were early, which meant a bit more hanging around at Dubai, but at least I was one of the first to check-in.

I'm shattered, and am struggling to stay awake for a few more hours, so, in theory, avoiding jet-lag. Got a party to go to, so we shall see how long I last before falling asleep in the corner.

Mixed emotions at this point. Glad to be back with my loved ones of course, but wish I'd had just a few more days to see one or two more things.

Another great sign!

I saw this sign on the way back down and it made me chuckle :-)

Hurrah! The summit of Misen-san

(viewed 931 times)

It was a struggle to the top but I made it! Fantastic views, the lower photo showing the view of Miyajimaguchi (location of the ferry port on the mainland).

The top picture is just the rest station at the summit, where I gulped down a can of Coke in seconds, I was so hot and thirsty.

Reika-do and Misen Hondo

(viewed 1818 times)
Well, it's not a long walk up to the summit but in all this heat and humidity it seemed like it would take forever. Part way up the trail is Reika-do (first pic) which according to the information is also known as the Eternal Fire Hall and there has been a sacred fire burning there ever since the year 806 when Kobo Daishi (a famous Buddhist monk) first lit it.

The Flame of Peace in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was lit from this very fire.

The second photo is of another part of the mountainside temple complex dedicated to Daishi.

Don't look the monkey in the eye!

It's okay, I kept my dark shades on so they couldn't see where I was looking! LOL!

Aren't they just adorable though :-)

Near the top of Mount Misen

(viewed 884 times)
The top picture is the view from near the top of the mountain of Hiroshima. It came out quite well considering how misty it was in the distance.

The bottom picture is yours truly when a friendly Japanese tourist offered to take my picture for me.

Arigato gozaimasu tourist-san. Thanks very much Mr Tourist!

Cable-car to Mount Misen

(viewed 1770 times)
Still on Miyajima island.

This seemed a great idea, that is until I was (what I thought was) halfway up and started to become quite anxious.

I have been like this since I did a bungee jump last year and seem to be developing a fear of falling rather than a fear of heights as such.

On reaching the top, I breathed a huge sigh of relief, thinking to myself I wouldn't think about the trip back down just yet, when I rounded the corner of the building to be greeted with the sight of another cable-car! (bottom pic)

Miyajima and Itsukushima-jinja

(viewed 5926 times)
This is what everyone comes to the island to see.

The magnificent Itsukushima-jinja is a Shinto shrine and comprises the main shrine in the top picture which is supported in the sea by wooden stilts, the pagoda, and the magnificent torii or gate pictured bottom.

The gates are normally at the front of of Shinto shrines or at the entrance to the grounds. The fact that this torii stands in the sea indicates that the whole island is deemed holy, or so I read.
