At Hartington Hall YHA. The last one is hard to read; it says "helping all to a greater knowledge love and care of the countryside".

So they raised a statue to this guy because he was a bigot? Oh, I see, his name was Antoine Bigot. A poet with an unfortunate name.

More from France

1. Another bloody waterfall.
2. See that snake? I didn't, I nearly trod on it.
3. This cross is reassuringly called La Croix de l'Homme Mort.

Picnic spot

Last Sunday was spent mountain biking, so I paid more attention to riding

Chemin de Croix de Gravieres

(viewed 1586 times)
Saw this on the road to Gravieres - a rather over-the-top shrine to St. Mary surrounded by smaller shrines illustrating scenes from the life of Jesus. The gardener's shed was pretty impressive, too.

Pont du Bourassou

More pictures from around Gravieres: an old bridge, apparently too dangerous to cross. It looked strong enough to me, but the river below was running pretty fast so I wimped out and obeyed the sign.

Near Gravieres

(viewed 1586 times)
More from last weekend's French trip. The Ardeche is riddled with interesting relics of it's rural economy. Here a series of man-made waterfalls (called levades) provided a source of water for the terraced gardens on the hillside.

French traffic lights can be dangerous. Do not approach the cage. Do
not attempt to feed or pet the traffic light.
