Rudston Monolith

(viewed 1154 times)
While we're on the subject of neolithic sites, I've just come back from
a holiday in the North York Moors with my parents (first time I've been
on holiday with them for 12 years!), via a trip to see Norm and El in
the Cotswolds (hence the tumping). I was armed with my copy of The
Modern Antiquarian (the neolithic gazetteer for heads, by the everyone's
favourite proto-space rocker and arch-head Julian Cope) throughout. It's
really a great book. Not full of insanist druidic ramblings as academic
archaeologists would have you believe, but some well argued points about
the form and function of ancient monuments and a list of a load of great
ones to visit. More here (link). On the
way to the moors we took a small detour into the Yorkshire Wolds to
visit the Rudston Monolith (the largest standing stone in England - 26
feet), which is situated in the graveyard of a medieval church.
