crossing the oresund

the journey from denmark to sweden across the oresund strait was so epic in proportions (read between the lines here...) that I'm moved to compare it to that of a voyage of vikings. the spirit of the norse warrior was within us when we boarded the great wooden longship, took to our seats and heaved back on giant oars as the ship cut through the water, reaching out across the oresund in search of strange new lands beyond the far horizon...

pic one - the ferry soon to depart

pic two - last look at kronborg, known to all as hamlet's castle

pic three - gazing out across the oresund

pic four - land ahoy! hurrah!

pic five - the actual distance between denmark and sweden. the ferry took fifteen minutes. you could probably swim it. in fact the water is so shallow you could practically walk it.

the madness of hamlet

in helsingor, the site and setting of shakespeare's most famous "tragedie". I'm hoping the spirit of hamlet's rage has somehow found its way into these film experiments...

design for life in louisiana

no, not that louisiana. this louisiana is (according to the guides) one of the finest modern art museums in scandinavia. situated on the bank of the oresund strait, the museum is made up of a bunch of impressively modern buildings proudly adorned with bacons and giacomettis, while the sculpture park is stuffed full of henry moores. the layout is particularly appealing as you can go and chill on the grass for a bit and breathe in the sea air before heading back in to take in some danish buffet and another picasso.

the main exhibition green architecture for the future is kind of overwhelming, an extravagant display of sustainable building designs and materials that could ultimately be used to create sustainable cities. and yes, that really is an apple tree connected up to a hospital drip.

andersen's copenhagen

"Unseen, we fly into the homes of men, where there are children, and for every day on which we find a good child who pleases his parents and deserves their love, God shortens our days of trial. The child does not know when we float through his room, but when we smile at him in approval one year is taken from our three hundred. But if we see a naughty, mischievous child we must shed tears of sorrow, and each tear adds a day to the time of our trial."

somehow, in a weird way, these pictures sum up my impressions of copenhagen...

the streets of den haag

(viewed 1513 times)
I should mention that not all of my holga pictures were treated to maniacal film experiments. the top pic certainly was - I left it in salty water overnight then dried it, pretty simple. I decided not to do the same with my camphone pics because I don't think "water damage" is covered in my phone's warranty...

film experiments: an introduction

this year I decided to have some serious fun with my summer holiday snaps. inspired by the cult of film destroying, I treated my holga negatives to all manner of household products in an attempt to produce images that are a little more challenging to the eye. the esoteric nature of holga pictures somehow lends itself well to this particular form of image manipulation. I've since found that daubing globs of peroxide bleach on your negs is a great and therapeutic way of bonding with your photos. and it's a lot of filthy fun as well. some of the results will follow shortly...

top pic, clockwise from top centre:

1 exotic dressing (soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, salt, lemon juice)

2 salt and vinegar

3 tea 'n' tabasco

4 marmite sandwich (with lettuce garnish)

5 cocktail (made from alcoholic bitters)

6 custard

scheveningen kiting

(viewed 870 times)
my moblog has become slightly over-run with kiting pictures of late... so here's a few more to add to the pile.

shortly after these pics were taken I kiteswam* the length of this gorgeous beach. I remember it was this time last year that I stood on scheveningen beach staring at all the power kites being flown and thinking, "gosh, it would be really nice to have one of those..."

*using the same motions as you would for swimming, using the kite to pull you along.
