Mendenhall Glacier

Just a few miles from the town centre is this massive glacier!

Welcome to Juneau!

Established in 1880 by Joe Juneau and Richard Harris after finding gold nuggets, Juneau is home to 3 of the largest goldmines in the world, with over $150 million mined by World War II. Juneau is now the state capital, despite only having some 30,000 people. It is also one of the biggest towns, by size, in the world. Only Kiruna (Sweden) and Sitka (Alaska) exceed Juneau's 3,248 square miles.
