A special service this morning...

(viewed 1999 times)
Good morning!

I have something very exciting planned for today...I’m going to be in London for this year’s Royal British Legion Field of Remembrance service at Westminster Abbey!
It all starts at 11am and once again I’ll be mingling with royalty as His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be kicking things off! If you’ve never seen this event before you really should go along and take a look. The Last Post will sound in Westminster from the parapet of St Margaret’s Church by Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry, which will then be followed by a two minute silence. The dignitaries will cast their eye over plots within the Field of Remembrance, and after this, it’s open to the public! It’s an excellent chance to meet some of the people involved in the Royal British Legion’s work, have a chat and enjoy some free refreshments.

Until then (hope you can make it), I’ve added some more great Welsh shots from my tour. That’s me at the Transporter Bridge, at Bala Lake and then in Snowdonia with some children I bumped into. I, er, probably do look a bit nervous in that last one….well, they were holding snowballs! My bright poppies mean that I’m such an easy target….

Spreading the word in Wales

(viewed 2767 times)
Hello again,

I’ve just managed to get hold of some fantastic images of my whirlwind Welsh tour. I met some great people as I travelled around (Dwi'n mwynhau dysgu Cymraeg!) – people who are putting so much time and effort into the Appeal this year. I really hope we can smash some records – wouldn’t that be amazing?

That's me at Caerphilly Castle, Caswell Bay, the Devil's Bridge and - gulp - with Miss Wales herself. I'll add a few more later - enjoy the snaps!

You know, I'm not going to be staying away from Wales for long - I'm popping back for the Prince's Cup match at the Millennium Stadium this Saturday! Anyone else going?

Beer in Bolton....but it's for the Appeal!

(viewed 1673 times)
Good morning everyone,

As if there aren't enough wonderful things happening around the UK in aid of the Poppy Appeal this year, I've just heard about something very unique!

It's not every day that a beer gets created and named for Remembrance Day, but that's exactly what the people of Bolton have done! Thwaites have brewed 'Liberation Ale' in support of the Royal British Legion for the last four years, and 10p from every pint and bottle sold goes to our Appeal. The drink was officially launched for 2008 yesterday, and you couldn't really miss its arrival into the town centre - two large shire horses pulled in the first lot of beer barrels on the back of a 1960s dray cart!
I hear that Thwaites has managed to raise £100,000 in support of ex-servicemen and women since 'Liberaton Ale' was first created, which just makes me so grateful and very proud. Thanks very much!

Trucker-sized Poppies!

(viewed 1786 times)
These oversized Poppies, worn with pride by my friend and colleague Andy & me, available from the Royal British Legion for a recommended donation of ten quid.
We're going to try and get the company to buy one for each of the 35 or so trucks we have on the (uk) roads next year. Would be a nice gesture.

On the street

(viewed 1852 times)
Hello,

Well, it wasn't the best day in the world to encourage people to take to the streets in aid of selling poppies (look at that gloomy sky!), but I was overwhelmed with support when I visited Parliament today!
I just wanted to get the word out that it's so easy to get involved with fundraising - anyone who wants to can do it, and believe me, it's extremely appreciated. If it means that just one more person spares some time for the Royal British Legion this year, then I'm happy!

Hello Mr Speaker!

(viewed 1721 times)
Hello all,

I have some exciting news...I've been invited to Parliament this morning by The Hon Michael J Martin MP, the Speaker of the House of Commons! It all feels very grand...I'm going along to help Parliament recruit more Poppy volunteers - although we've been lucky enough to have enlisted 300,000 helpers this year, we'd love to get the support of another 10,000. It's ambitious but I reckon it's do-able if both young and old are kind enough to get involved :) Fingers crossed my meeting goes well!

I blogged yesterday about those beautiful poppy jewels that are up for auction (there's still time to put in your bid!), and I've noticed a bit of a theme occuring. The West Bromwich Albion football club have also entered into the bidding spirit and are auctioning 18 special poppy-embroidered shirts for our Appeal!
The players wore a symbolic splash of red on their characteristic blue and white striped kits for their match against Blackburn (they drew 2-2), and now you can get hold of one by clicking here! To make the shirts even better (if possible!), each player has signed their own....the auction closes on the 13th between 4.30pm and 5.30pm...What are you waiting for?
