Saturday morning kitchen

Upright Cannelloni!

A different twist on yer basic Spag-Bol & pasta dish.

Onions, leeks, carrots and celery softened in some olive oil.

Some of them dried mushrooms, (Porcini?) hot water over them for 5 mins then
chopped and added to the veg mix with a couple of chopped garlic cloves.
Save the water for adding later.

Fry up some mince (or don't, if you're veggie) add some chopped mushrooms
and fry-on!

Add in a couple of tins of plum tomatoes and a squeeze of tom-puree, then
simmer for a few minutes, maybe adding some water if the Porcini juice
wasn't enough.

A white/cheese sauce made from Creme fresh and single cream with loads of
Parmesan cheese in a 1cm layer on the bottom of the oven dish, followed by a
layer of wilted spinach, seasoned with nutmeg. And then half the Spag-Bol

Stuff the Cannelloni tubes into the layers of good-stuff until the pan's
full then pour over the other half of the Spag-Bol mixture, filling the
tubes up.

Follow with a layer of the creme sauce and a liberal sprinkling of Parmesan

Bake in the oven for 1/2hr to 40 mins or until it's all bubbled over the
side and made a right old mess of your oven.

And Bob's your Auntie's Brother!

Snow! and storm damage!

(viewed 1092 times)
It was windy as hell yesterday and then it snowed.
Winter has arrived!
Our greenhouse thing was blown over, luckily it's made of plastic and could
be righted again ok. A few plants in there a bit shook up but no casualties.

Black & White

(viewed 1103 times)
Sinterklaas is "helped" by "Black Piet" (who is black from the soot in the chimberlys he climbs up and down, apparently)
It's never really been a problem, not really considered strange for white people, in Holland, to "black-up" during the Sinterklaas period.
Once, a couple of years ago, they tried to make them "Rainbow Piets" by colouring them up all different; greens, reds, blues, etc. but it didn't catch on.
I'm not much of a fan of "the Good Holy Man", more of a "Fat Santa" guy myself, but I do think it's a shame that this is becoming less popular, in favour of Father Christmas, in the Netherlands.
Local traditions are important in this increasingly homogeneous world.

"Sinterklaas" arrived (from Spain)
Between now and the 5th of December he and his "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete)
will be terrorizing little children.
Really, check out some of his tricks on Wikkipedia (beatings
with sticks, getting stuffed into a sack and taken away to Spain) the kids
are terrified of him and his clan of "helpers".

Billiard ball

All smoothed and evened-out now, short, to the max, but not quite as scary.
I'll keep wearing the hat though, it's bloody cold out now!
(these 2 pictures take with the N95's "front camera", rubbish quality but sometimes a quirky effect)

I decided I needed a haircut so I bought this neat little rechargable clipper thing, recharged it all day in the truck and took it onto the boat with me last night. Halfway through scalping myself the battery ran down. The charger was still in the truck, inaccessible.
Luckily I have a hat, untill the battery charges back up.
