Best of the Show

(viewed 432 times)
We need not go into the details here but I managed to blag my way into the ultra-high security Infinity Ward demo room to have a look at Modern Warfare 2 - no cameras allowed. Let's just say I owe someone a big favour. The demo they showed was the full, unedited version from the E3 trailer, and it's gorgeous, the faces, weapons and background textures are a huge step up from the first one, and in every other respect it looks to be better than that - already near perfect - game. I want it more than any other game at E3, and I want it now. “Take out that moppet” said the SAS sargeant, we need to find another rowt”. “I don't mean to be rude” I said, “but I think you'll find it's pronounced 'route', and the correct word is 'muppets'”. “It's temporary sound” he said. “Well I won't mention it in, er, the Times, who I work for” I said.

Halo ODST

(viewed 442 times)
Hello, Halo

The queue for the ODST demo booth was an hour and a half long, and to make matters worse ran under a huge Warner Bros billboard belching out rubbish trailers on a five minute loop. Ask me anything about Aragorn's Quest, go on (actually, please don't). The ten minutes of firefight mode (Basically Horde, but with Covenant instead of Locust) were well worth the wait though – the game looks a lot better than Halo 3, and I'd happily pay £40 for the new mode on it's own. Shh, don't tell Bungie.

This is the only photo we were allowed to take - the score screen after. I was worst in my team :(

Forza 3 Launch

(viewed 1005 times)
I wanted to find some adjective that would do Forza 3 justice, but I couldn't think of a single word that was enthusiastic enough. In the end, I had to settle for this – Forza 3 is fantastic; if Forza 2 was the gold standard for next-gen racing sims (and lets face it, it was) Forza 3 is the diamond standard, hell, it's not even a standard, using the word “standard” in the same sentence as Forza 3 just doesn't do it justice. I already knew this from the time I spent with the game on the showroom floor, but that didn't mean I couldn't go to the launch party, held in a huge marquee on the rooftop carpark in downtown LA, just to, y'know, make sure.

I'm happy to report that the game is indeed fantastic, there were enough pods in the venue to allow uninterrupted play and having tested a variety of cars on a variety of tracks, I think it's fair to say that there is absolutely nothing that can match this game in terms of quality, and it's unlikely there will be for a few years yet. The evening was brightened up by the high-performance sportscars on display throughout the venue, the zenith of which had to be the matte black, 12 cylinder Lamborghini Murcielago, with all leather cream interior and gorgeous black gloss rims. A small discreet sign forbade anyone to touch the vehicle, but just once couldn't hurt, surely? I ran my hand over the car's glossy flank, drinking in the promise of monstrous power deep within the smooth carapace. Love at first sight doesn't begin to describe it – until I heard a voice in my ear “Sir, can you step away from the vehicle.” I turned round to find the most enormous bouncer this side of a trampoline warehouse, with an expression his face that said “I'm being polite, but I don't have to be. ” I didn't really want to know about impolite, so regretfully I stepped away. Millionaires of Britain – your choice is clear. For everyone else, there's Forza.

Natal Natal Natal

(viewed 749 times)
As me and Kieran walked to the Alan Wake trailer showing, a small enthusiastic American accosted us. “You guys got a minute?” No, I don't think so. His friend hovered in the background with a TV camera – whatever it was, Alan Wake was more tempting. “You guys want to play Natal?” he yelled at our retreating backs, causing all thought of Remedy's near-vapourware to evaporate. Twenty exciting Burnout Paradise filled minutes later we left the private Natal room with one regret – the year long wait till it's available to the public. Seriously, it's that good.

Op. Flashpoint 2

(viewed 361 times)
Me and Anthony were the first - the very first - to play Flashpoint 2 outside of Codemasters. At least, that's what the guy told us.

[....]

(viewed 559 times)
We met Molyneux in his hotel suite this evening, carefully shepherded by PR. "What are you working on?" I asked him. "It's secret", he said, "but it starts with an F and ends in E, and it's five letters". I wonder what the maker of Fable 1 & 2 could be working on that fits that description...
